How to Sew by Hand: A Step by Step Guide for Beginners

Sometimes you may need to sew by hand instead of a machine for any particular reason. In such a case, you must be aware of the pros and cons of sewing by hand though in this modern period many people are not familiar with these. You may search on the Internet for a satisfied tutorial but alas you will hardly find anyone like that written on this neglected topic!

But, we don’t want you to feel disheartened for that and so today our article will dig into the entire method of sewing using hand. You can read the line between because who knows when you are to sew by hand.

The step by step guideline for sewing by hand

The guideline is quite long, so the entire thing has been divided into small chunks for your better understanding with easiness. Here we go!

The Kit:

Generally, you get a machine as a compact container of a number of tools, so you don’t feel the necessity of having anything extra. But, in hand sewing, you don’t get anything like that and so normally, you need to have the following kit.

Needle:

It is the primary tool for sewing by hand. Though there are many types of needles yet you shouldn’t go for any of those randomly. Instead, you must pick the needle by your fabric’s thickness. The thicker your fabric is, the thicker your needle is to be, and otherwise, the needle may bend or break. On the contrary, never go for a thicker needle if you are to sew something softer.

Thread:

A thread is an equally important material tool for hand sewing. Normally, all-purpose or polyester thread fits most of the projects. But, if you want to ensure more quality, in this case, try to have the type of thread that matches the thread quality of your fabric. Don’t forget matching your thread color with that of the fabric.

Scissors:

Scissors is not as important as that of the previously discussed tools as you can have a blade or use your teeth for cutting the thread. But, using a scissor is strongly recommended because the cutting quality of a scissor is far better.

Seam ripper:

It’s a small size fork-shaped tool that contains a sharp blade on the top. You can use it to clear away the faulty stitches.

Threading the needle:

Just like the needle threading of a sewing machine, also in this hand sewing, you need to thread the needle through the method is completely different. Generally, in a sewing machine, you are to complete the needle threading within a strict process. On the contrary, this hand sewing needle threading is just like a childish task.

At first, you must make sure that the end of your thread is cut nicely with sharp scissors. Otherwise, the disorganized end will create a disturbance for you. Then, hold the needle using the left hand. Use your right hand to keep holding the thread’s end. Put your focus on the needle’s eye and slowly insert the thread end into that eye. Once a bit of the end is inserted, pull the end to the extent you may need for sewing. After that cut off the thread from the thread spool and tie the two ends tightly.

Two types of stitches:

After the completion of the needle threading, it is time to jump to the stitching. There are two types of stitching mostly used for hand sewing: running stitch and backstitch. Here follow the details of these two.

Running stitch:

Running stitch is widely used for binding the two torn parts of the fabric. The stitching is quite easier for shortening your clothes, fixing the falling hems, and even for affixing a patch to your bomber jacket. To sew your fabric using this stitch, you must follow the steps given below:

  1. At first, dig the needle through both torn parts of the fabric.
  2. Push the needle back via the fabric up to a ¼” over. Now, you one stitch is done.
  3. Continue this unto the seam’s end
  4. For closing the stitches, drive the needle via the fabric without drawing the thread the entire way for
  5. creating a loop.
  6. Drive the needle back via the fabric and then loop for creating a secure knot
  7. Repeat this for minimum two to the maximum four times.

Backstitch:

Primarily, it is also useful for binding two torn parts of the fabric. Also, you can adopt this stitching for mending the broken seam of your shirt, reattaching a backpack-strap, and attaching a patch over your jean’s hole. Here is how you can actualize this stitch.

  • Make ¼” stitch about what you have already been informed in the running stitch segment
  • Then, take the needle back to the initial stitch by digging it via a ¼” away from the beginning of the first.
  • Take the needle back down via the fabric for closing the gap.

So, here end the two vital stitching methods for sewing by hand. But, the guideline doesn’t end here rather here follows the method of button sewing as the last segment of today’s writing.

Button-sewing:

Sewing button using the hand is comparatively tougher than that of using a machine. Here follow the steps in a simple way for you:

  • Dig the needle up via a hole of the button.
  • Dig the needle down via the opposite hole of the previous hole
  • Keep doing this for several times until you feel the button is tightly attached
  • Finish the sewing from the down of the fabric
  • Apply some random sewing on the pile of the thread that is under the fabric along the button. It strengthens the button sewing.

Conclusions:

Although the guideline may appear to be a bit complicated to you in beginning yet we guarantee you of not having the same feeling once you repeat the writing. We also confirm that the guideline is 100% practical, so if you follow it meticulously, your sewing by hand is going to flourish and amaze all very shortly. There is no prospect of thinking that sewing by hand is extinct as this is still widely practiced globally by the women for multiple purposes.
